Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson (Icelandic: [ˈhafθour ˈjuːlijʏs ˈpjœr̥sɔn] ( audio speaker icon heed ); in English transliterated every bit Hafthor; born 26 November 1988) is an Icelandic professional strongman and actor. He is the beginning person to accept won the Arnold Strongman Classic, Europe's Strongest Man and World's Strongest Man in the same calendar yr.[1] [2] He played Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane in the HBO series Game of Thrones for five seasons. He also is a former professional basketball player.

Built-in in Reykjavík, Hafþór began his basketball game career in 2004 with Division I team Breiðablik, moving to FSu in 2005. He transferred to Premier League side KR in 2006 before returning to FSu in 2007. He helped FSu to promotion from Partition I to the Premier League but his career was cut short in 2008 due to a recurrent ankle injury. He after began his strongman career.

Hafþór won the Strongest Homo in Iceland outcome in 2010, and Republic of iceland'due south Strongest Man in 2011. He won Europe's Strongest Homo in 2014, a feat he repeated in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2019. He won gilded at the Arnold Strongman Classic in 2018, 2022 and 2020. He first competed in the Earth's Strongest Homo in 2011, placing 6th. He won three bronze and iii silver medals in his next six attempts earlier existence crowned champion in 2018.

On 2 May 2020, Hafþór deadlifted a record-setting 501 kilograms (1,105 lb) under strongman rules, wearing a deadlift suit and straps.

Background [edit]

Hafþór was born on 26 November 1988 in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavík.[3] His father, Björn, stands at 203 cm (6 ft 8 in),[4] and his mother, Ragnheiður, is also of very tall stature.[3] Hafþór's grandfather, Reynir, is 207 cm (6 ft 9+ 12  in)[four] and "only every bit broad across the chest". Hafþór speaks fluent Swedish, Norwegian, Icelandic, English language, and French. Reynir recalled in 2022 that Hafþór worked on the family farm outside Reykjavík as a child and "was always large, even when he wasn't tall".[iii]

Basketball career [edit]

Hafþór began his able-bodied career as a basketball histrion. At 2.06 1000 (6 ft ix in),[5] he started his senior team career with Sectionalization I club Breiðablik in 2004, playing as a center. In 2005 he joined FSu Selfoss, also in the Icelandic Segmentation I. After 10 games information technology was discovered that he had been playing with a broken bone in his ankle and would crave surgery. After recovering from surgery, Hafþór moved to Úrvalsdeild powerhouse KR in 2006.[6] He missed most of the 2006–2007 season after a screw in his talocrural joint shattered and had to be fixed past another surgery.[7]

For the 2007–2008 season, he moved dorsum to play for FSu Selfoss. He averaged six.7 points per game,[8] helping the squad achieve promotion to the Úrvalsdeild,[9] but the troublesome talocrural joint forced him to retire from basketball afterwards the flavour, at the age of xx.[10] [eleven]

Between 2004 and 2006, Hafþór played 32 games for the Icelandic inferior national basketball game teams.[12] In 2006 he played 8 games with Iceland's U-eighteen national team in Division A of the U18 European Championship.[thirteen]

Hafþór met Icelandic strongman Magnús Ver Magnússon at his gym "Jakaból" in 2008, and Magnús said that Hafþór seemed a good prospect as a strongman.[sixteen] Hafþór won several strongman contests in Iceland in 2010, including Strongest Man in Republic of iceland,[17] Iceland'south Strongest Viking, Westfjords Viking,[18] and 5 of half-dozen events at the OK Badur Strongman Championships.[4]

Hafþór finished in second place at the inaugural Jón Páll Sigmarsson Classic in November 2010, behind Brian Shaw.[xix] He won the 2011 Strongest Human being in Iceland contest on 4 June 2011,[twenty] and the 2011 Iceland's Strongest Man contest on eighteen June 2011.[21] He placed quaternary in the Giants Live Poland 2011 event on 6 August 2011.[ citation needed ]

In January 2015, at the World's Strongest Viking contest held in Kingdom of norway, Hafþór carried a 10-metre-long (33 ft), 650-kilogram (1,430 lb) log for five steps, thus breaking a 1,000-yr-quondam record set by Orm Storolfsson.[22]

On 15 February 2020, Hafþór deadlifted an unofficial earth record on the elephant bar with 480 kilograms (i,058 lbs).

On 2 May 2020, Hafþór deadlifted 501 kilograms (1,105 lb) under strongman rules at his gym in Republic of iceland while being refereed by Magnús Ver Magnússon. This achievement was televised alive by ESPN. Hafþór surpassed the strongman deadlift record of 500 kilograms (1,102 lb) which was set by Eddie Hall in 2016.[23]

World's Strongest Man [edit]

Hafþór took role in World's Strongest Man later earning a wild card invitation to the 2011 contest.[24] He came in 6th overall. Taking part once more in ensuing years, he placed tertiary in 2012, 2013 and 2015. He finished runner-upwards in 2022 outcome[25] to Žydrūnas Savickas and over again in the 2022 outcome to Brian Shaw.[26] In 2017, Hafþór once again was runner up, this fourth dimension to Eddie Hall.[27] Hafþór won the 2022 World's Strongest Human being,[i] [two] thus becoming the showtime Icelander to win the title since Magnús Ver Magnússon in 1996.[28]

On 3 March 2018, Hafþór broke the Elephant Bar deadlift earth record with his successful 472 kg (1,041 lb) third try, as well as being champion of the Arnold Strongman Archetype 2018. The previous Elephant Bar deadlift world record of 468 kg (i,032 lb) was set past Jerry Pritchett at the Arnold Strongman Archetype 2017.[30] [31]

Hafþór dedicated his title at the Arnold Strongman Archetype 2019; he finished on 45 points, 4.5 points alee of runner-upwardly Martins Licis. After successfully defending his crown, Hafþór became only the 2d person to win three Arnold Strongman Classics in a row (2018, 2022 and 2020) subsequently Zydrunas Savickas.

Steroids admission [edit]

In a 2022 interview, when asked if he had ever used steroids, Hafþór answered: "Yes, I accept". He added, "When you desire to be the best, you practice whatever it takes". Hafþór declined to say when he had used steroids or whether his utilise of the substances was ongoing.[34] [35] [36]

Battle career [edit]

In September 2021, Insider reported that Hafþór had lost 121 lbs. over an xviii-month period in preparation to embark on a battle career.[37] On 18 September 2021, Hafþór defeated Devon Larratt in a battle lucifer at CoreSports' Fight Dark 3; the fight was stopped in the showtime round.[38] Hafþór is scheduled to fight former strongman Eddie Hall on 19 March 2022 in Dubai.[39] [40]

Acting career [edit]

Hafþór was bandage as Ser Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane for the fourth flavor of the HBO series Game of Thrones in August 2013.[41] This was his kickoff main acting office, and he is the third person to depict the graphic symbol later on Conan Stevens played the role in season i and Ian Whyte in season 2. Hafþór has a daughter with his former girlfriend Thelma Björk Steimann.[44] [45] [46] [47] [48] Until early 2017, he was in a relationship with Andrea Sif Jónsdóttir whom he met at a gym. They lived together in Reykjavík. In an online video interview by Mulligan Brothers published 21 Dec 2019, Hafþór lamented not having seen his daughter in three years.[49]

Since late 2017, Hafþór had been dating Kelsey Henson, a Canadian waitress. The two met when Hafþór was in Alberta, Canada for a strongman competition and visited the bar where Henson worked. The couple garnered attention for the departure in their corresponding heights, as Henson is 157 cm (5 ft 2 in).[48] [50] [51] On 21 October 2018, Hafþór announced that he and Henson had married.[52] [53] On 26 September 2020, Hafþór and Henson welcomed their kickoff child together, a baby male child named Stormur Magni Hafþórsson.[54]

Tattoos [edit]

Hafþór has several tattoos, including tattoos relating to Norse deities and the Viking culture. He also has a tattoo of Jón Páll Sigmarsson on his calf.[55] [56]

Health [edit]

Hafþór and his old girlfriend Andrea Sif Jónsdóttir have spoken nearly his occasional sleep troubles after a heavy meal due to his body weight.[55] [56]

In March 2017, he was diagnosed with Bell'due south palsy.[57] [51]

Domestic violence allegations [edit]

Hafþór has been accused of domestic violence by several ex-girlfriends. One woman alleged that he caused her an injury that led to her hospitalization. The woman pressed charges, but the instance did not go farther than that.[58] Hafþór has since charged the adult female with slander.[59]

On 8 June 2017, the law was chosen to Hafþór'south home, equally his girlfriend was seen escaping out of a window. The police had been called to his home iii times that year because of domestic disputes. Each time, his girlfriend appeared battered and bruised, according to the police.[sixty] Three more of Hafþór's ex-girlfriends since came forward and accused him of domestic violence, and neighbours accept reported police arriving to his residence after hearing a woman screaming. Hafþór and his lawyer threatened whatever reporting of domestic abuse allegations with legal activity.[61] Subsequently, Thelma Björk Steimann, the mother of one of Hafþór'southward children, came forward for the first time in an extensive interview; Steimann stated that "she feared for her life" while she was involved with Hafþór.[62]

Hafþór is a brand ambassador for SodaStream, a company involved in manufacture of a device for making carbonated water at home.
